My doctor wasn't happy that I didn't get a pap smear: Advice?

It’s not fun but it is necessary

Not to be mean, but you are a fool not to get one.

What is a few seconds of being uncomfortable to day/months or even years of being sick AND uncomfortable or dead. because you had cancer that was never caught because you thought a pap smear was a violation of your privacy. They are necessary and lifesaving. Especially after having a baby. They check for infections.

They can often give you a check up at the same time. I’ve had friends whose lives were saved from things picked up on smear tests. It’s quick, relatively pain and hassle free and can pick up problems before they spread. Why would you not have one?

Is this post a joke? The doctor isn’t shaming you by giving you the facts and seriously you think that pap smears don’t save lives?

Pap smears ARE very important. But, good luck with cancer. :+1:

So you had a baby and probably shit on the table while everyone was all up in your space but you have a problem with a pap ? And may I ask how old you are because the nieve thoughts that nothing is detected through them sounds like someone with no life experience , I found out I had cancerous cells from one which probably saved my life , what do you think the enjoyment is for the Dr that they would give a shit if it wasn’t medically needed , your immature and need to really do some research , best of luck get the fucking pap rather than leave your child without a mother

It’s a preventative. Waiting until you have symptoms could be too late. I hate them too and rarely stay on top of them, which is stupid bc issues actually run in my family. But, now it’s every 3 years instead of annually. Suck it up and get it done.

Pap smears are medically necessary…

It is necessary. Its part of a woman’s health.

It’s important you get your Pap smears. Your doctor CARES ABOUT YOUR HEALTH :pray: and you’re kind of ridiculing her for it and think you’re in the right?!

Take the advice and get the papsmear

Pap Smears are a very important part of being a woman. They can and do find cancer before your body knows it’s there. Thus increasing your odds of surviving cervical cancer. If you don’t get regular pap smears done, and unfortunately have cancer, by the time your body alerts you to it, it will have likely spread to your uterus, ovaries and even other organs of your body. Early detection and vaginal health should be a top priority for every female.

Very sad that women think they should not get one if it is not medically necessary this is personal if my best friend would of kept up on her pap smears they would of caught Vular Cancer in time before she was butchered and deformed because of her lazy self thinking all was ok her one and only symptoms was constant itching and burning the out come she killed her self feeling her marriage was going to end because of the deformity and the children were the ones that suffered hate to talk like this about the decesed but I am still angry at her because she has missed so much all those grand babies that she never got to see.

They found precancerous cells in my pap. Thank god they caught this

My cousin had cervical cancer. It killed her. Pap smears save lives. The doctor isn’t shaming you, they’re doing their job by informing you why it’s important to do. You don’t want it? Don’t get it and roll the dice. You’re not hurting the doctor.

My question to you is, are you a millennial? I’m seriously just curious for myself. Not making any judgements toward millennials but there seems to be a lot of misinformation with that generation. I’ll also add this this is just my personal opinion so no one gets their undies in a bunch.

Go get your pap unless you want to potentially die from cancer. I’ve never had cancer thankfully, but I did have a scare a few years ago and that was one one of the most nerve-wracking experiences of my life and I’m only 30.

Pap smears are VERY important. My mom never had any done and then got cervical cancer that wasn’t diagnosed until she went into the 3rd stage. That then turned her health completely upside down and after she beat it she still couldn’t get better and just kept getting sick until eventually she got so sick that she passed away. GET YOUR PAPS DONE!!!

I myself thonk you are being foolish. A few minutes of uncomfortableness is well worth the pain and worrying of cervical cancer. Take it from someone who knows !!! A hysterectomy is a lot more painful and a lot more devastating mentally that a few minutes of discomfort. Get it done and keep having them. You just never know when you may be " the other guy " thats what I always thought. " It won’t happen to me, it will happen to the other guy " SURPRISE TO ME !! One day I was the other guy and at 23 years old had to have a total hysterectomy. No more babies, early menopause. Not fun !!!

Get the pap.

I said no thank you and moved on. You don’t have to do anything that’s invasive. Get a new doctor if you feel uncomfortable

These things are super important. They catch things before they are dangerous like cancer. Get it done and listen to your damn dr about that.

I was like this wouldn’t get it done but after what my mum died of I get mine done when needs to be best thing I did to be honest

Its your body, ultimately its up to you but quite frankly it would be stupid not to. Yearly paps can save your life because your body won’t tell you if you get hpv and cervical cancer. I’m horrible with pain and its not that bad. Its uncomfortable sure. But If you die young because you were too stubborn to get a 3 second pap, that’s gonna be on you :woman_shrugging:

If it was necessary they wouldn’t do them :woman_shrugging:t3:

Personally think it’s stupid not to get them. It’s not enjoyable but it’s worth it for a few seconds of discomfort.

Get the Pap smear.

It is medically necessary.

Many of my friends in their 20’s have been diagnosed with cervical cancer with no signs or symptoms. Thankfully for normal pap smears it was caught.

And you just had baby. To make sure everything is ok post baby I would want to be doing that 100%.

Absolutely not you are completely wrong this should be done and honestly they only do them every 5 years now, they should be done yearly

Once a year get a pap.Hpv can give u cervical cancer. Stupid not to get checked. Don’t say your man don’t have it or u cause Men have no symptoms. So Noone knows. Be a grown up and get checked.

Your doctor is correct! It can detect changes which can lead to ovarian cancer, which if caught early can be treated. It can potentially save your life!

I would strongly advise you to educate yourself. Pap smears are extremely important, they check for cervical cell changes which can indicate cancer nice and early giving you a stronger chance of surviving… I’m presuming you must have a crystal ball that’s shown you you will never have this cancer so you don’t need the checks. If however you haven’t it’s only your own life you’re risking :person_shrugging:

Anybody reading the comments, Do your daughters a favor and make sure you get these done so that they can see that it’s important also so you don’t have to go through what I watch 2 children go through and lose their mother due to not having a papsmear
in 8 years and knowing she had something wrong took her life at a very young age took their mother took there took their innocence

But it is necessary…to prevent and possibly detect early signs of cervical cancer.
How you gonna trust your obgyn to DELIVER YOUR BABY but not trust their word on pap smears?
How is the pap smear invading privacy but the obgyn between ya knees, breaking water and checking dialation and delivering your child into this world isn’t?
8+ years of college, something like 2-4 years interning and studying under other doctors plus numerous years of experience…and you’re gonna question their concern when you refuse a possibly lifesaving, extremely brief, and usually ranging from painless to ‘ouch that kinda hurt’.
Maybe you should get a doctorate, you are soooo informed.

I say fake question.

My sister died from cervical/uterine cancer at the age of 56.

FIFTY SIX.

Get the pap smear.

This is no joke, the dr was right they are probably fed up of the amount of people who refuse / can’t be bothered getting one . It’s really sad because not getting one won’t stop you from getting cancer always better to be safe than sorry . It’s not even painful if you relax x

I would always try to get a Pap smear. It’s so you don’t have any abnormalities and other issues. I guess for all the people who have all those pointless ones then get cancer that they do those. It’s the better safe than sorry thinking. I’d rather not be surprised with cancer.

They do them every 3 years here if past results are normal. Now they are discussing a shorter swab you can use at home as they are testing for hpv which doesn’t require swabbing the cervix.
Are these tests a useful diagnostic tool ? Of course. Like a mammogram they can show results before symptoms are obvious and can therefore catch changes before the cancer spreads.
Like everything else…its personal choice whether you have the tests or not. Saying its not painful …very much depends on who’s doing the swabbing .

I consider it to be preventative care. Catching things early can make all the difference. Better safe than sorry.

I didn’t want to go for the longest time but I’m glad I did because I ended up having beginning stages of cervical cancer and had no signs or symptoms and was glad it was found early enough to avoid chemotherapy!

You don’t wanna make sure you don’t have cancer?!

It is a medical necessity though. Its something all women should have done every year. Cervical cancer can pop up out of no where and if you aren’t getting the proper tests done, or could be to late to fight it.

You have every right to die from cancer with no intervention. But don’t forget the lessons you teach your daughters. I’ve buried a mother who put off mammograms. Her excuse at least was no insurance.

So you would rather risk cancer going undetected - then a quick 5 min exam that would probably save your life….

Please don’t have daughters and pass that kind of level of stupidity on

Your Dr shouldn’t be angry you should be besides yourself. Pap smears are nothing BUT a health check. I believe you are old enough to know what’s important and what’s not. Go get checked girl!

When did we become a society that thinks they know better than someone who went to school for 8 years and did rotations and internships and residencies, etc? Like… who tf you think you are?
On the other hand, maybe modern medicine has protected the human race from natural selection for far too long and this is just the result? As Jeff Goldblum said, “Life finds a way.” Well… apparently so does death?
Just don’t be asking for handouts and help when you’re juggling 3 kids under 10 and chemo treatments and a hysterectomy just to keep your ass alive.

What if you get ovarian cancer and leave your child without a mother .? As women this is one of the most important things to get done .woman up

Where do you get the so few from? Many women in my family has caught things early enough to effectively treat it before it was to late.

LOL you would rather be treated for cervical cancer VERSES doing something preventative and catching it early? OKAYYY

Have I thought about the fact that there is a relatively painless and easy procedure done so they can detect HPV or cervical cancer?!? Ummm yeah, I think it’s a great thing…… seeings as how I don’t want to die from undiagnosed cancer and leave my children without a mother….
The fact that most of the time they “find nothing wrong” is a good thing……
A violation of your privacy?! Umm what?!

I consider it preventative care. I had cervical cancer at 29. Almost bled to death. It all started with an annoying stomach pain! Sooo I highly disagree.

You thinking it’s not necessary doesn’t mean it’s not important. And it finds more problems than you would think. Just bc you don’t know someone who has had an abnormal pap doesn’t mean it’s not saving thousands of lives every day. And you dr is judging you bc you’re putting your child at risk of losing their mother.

Put it this way okay…1) don’t get it done, which by the way takes seconds to do, and potentially be one of the unlucky women to actually have cervical/ovarian cancer and because you didn’t have the pap when offered and left it past the point of not being able to treat the cancer. Or 2) get it done, gets the OK that everything is fine, or again if you were one of the unlucky women to get cancer, having the pap could pick up on it early enough to intervene and treat you and save your life. If you’ve got children then I don’t know why you wouldn’t have it done to make sure you’re going to be around for you children :woman_shrugging:t2: this small and extremely quick test saves lives.

HPV is VERY common and you should be getting a pap annually to protect yourself from potential cancer.
It take 3 minutes max once a year.

If my sister would have had her routine Pap smear after her son was born it would have caught her cervical cancer that spread beyond treatment and killed her not even 2years after her son was born. Early detection is key when dealing with health issues.

But… pap smears are VERY necessary?

I’m with you. I haven’t had one in years. I only ever have one if by chance anything feels off or seems out of sorts. I think the regulation of how often you need to do something medically should be left up to you as it is your body. These things are not mandatory to do but some take them to the extreme and do them like clock work. If nothing feels wrong nothing seems wrong and all is normal then no one needs to be shoving a speculum into my vagina and scrapping my cervix like they’re trying to dig out the biggest bestest scoop of ice cream. It’s absolutely absurd and unnecessary. An if your doctor likes to guilt trip you then maybe you need to find another one bc clearly she isn’t about listening to the patient as she should be.

Your body,your choice.

Could save your life, I not a fan either but if something is wrong or found I want it taken care of.

The opposite is a lot worst trust me

It’s definitely necessary…. I get mine done every year. You wouldn’t want cervical cancer and this way they can catch it before it’s to far gone.

Your choice, but it is a very necessary preventative procedure that can detect issues in the early stages.

How do you think they find cervical cancer?.. from pap smears

I mean it is is your choice. I also agree standard answers of “it’s painless” should be addressed. Because pap smears ARE NOT painless for me never have been. Which made me think for many years something was seriously wrong with me, there isn’t, but these routine statements should be addressed. With that said, a pap smear is important, early detection is important.

Go for the smear test! That’s it. Just go for it. Do you have any idea how many women are literally begging their dr’s for one and being told they have to wait x number of years? This shouldn’t even be an issue. It’s just like a eye test or getting the flu jab. It’s preventative and the majority will have a clear result but for those who don’t? A smear could be life saving.

It could save your life. Get the smear done and be thankful this test is available to you.

You just had a child and ANYTHING CAN GO WRONG AND NOT BE NOTICED RIGHT AWAY. As a mother and a woman you should want to be 100% checked for wellness. I had cervical cancer it 17 which came back at 23. If I didn’t get checked I would’ve never known. I’m 35 now and thankful that they did what they needed to, found out what was what, and helped to keep me here today for my babies.

It is your choice but I agree with your doctor, and they most certainly are necessary. I had one after I had my daughter in November, it was uncomfortable but I was not in agony. I’m glad I did because she found out I have the human papillomavirus, she also found some Low grade squamous intraepithelial lesions on my cervix. They did a colposcopy (which was way worse than the pap) and a biopsy of each area, the cell changes came back as normal but I do need go back in October to check things again. One of the scariest moments of my life, get your effing pap done.

Privacy? Seriously? You state you have a child. Your privacy is already gone. This is a simple, very important test for women. It can save your life. Think of your child without a mother. Get the test done.
