My doctor wasn't happy that I didn't get a pap smear: Advice?

Paps are 100% medically necessary. End of discussion. Get a Pap smear and a breast exam. Cancer is not something you want.

You’re doctor is right. You need one.

You sound childish grow up it’s literally there for preventative health care you just had a child anything could be wrong and you’d never know because you needed your privacy

Get the pap. It’s the best thing to be able to monitor your health.

i hated getting them done but made myself…and it was discovered i had pre cancerous cells… had a laser removal op so the couldn’t develop into cancer. put simply, this test can save your life, so yes, its a medical neccessity

If you feel like a PAP is a violation of privacy then I hope you had a C Section when you had your baby because there is no greater “violation of privacy” then having a shit ton of strangers look at your hooha while that baby pops out

You sound childish and uneducated

It is medically necessary for preventative measures. The test themselves can check for many things

That’s is extremely ignorant considering you just had a baby. The doctor makes people get checked for a GOOD REASON smh. VERY childish…

Better safe than sorry, let’s hope sometime in the future you don’t live to regret your decision!

Look, this isn’t meant to be an invasive assessment. This is a very important exam that ensures your health is where it needs to be. Millions of women have issues with healing after having a baby, carry stds, and come up with abnormal pap smears annually. It’s up to you to refuse if you want, but research has shown they are beneficial to your sexual and reproductive well-being.

WOW! Just WOW! Honey your privacy has already been lost, the first time you had sex, when you had a child and you were spread eagle all over that delivery table. Grow up Woman! Pap smears are 100% necessary, as are mammograms and self breast exams. You are being selfish to your husband and child. If you don’t want to do it for yourself, do it for THEM…

Get a pap. That’s how I found out I had a polyp and then uterine cancer. Pap smears are absolutely medically necessary.

They are literally trying to help you and urge you to make good decisions about your health. It’s their job. Are you going to be upset when something goes wrong that you didn’t take preventative measures?

No offense but the reason doctors push so hard for those tests are to ensure you do not have disease, cancerous cells…etc. They are medically necessary and could save your life. Having a baby is significantly more of an “invasion of privacy” than getting swabbed.

I never liked pap smears but I had a yearly done and found out I have cervical dysplasia and had to have a leep procedure done to remove the cells. And dysplasia is one of the leading causes for cervical cancer. So from a personal experience I would never deny having one

So let me get this straight: your DOCTOR advised you to get a Pap smear and instead of listening to the person with YEARS of medical school education, you’re on here asking us?:woman_facepalming:t4:

My thoughts are that you need to get a pap smear ma’am. They are medically necessary and could possibly save ur life !!

I thought they weren’t important, until they found severe dysplasia (mine was stage 0 cervical cancer). They are very important!! Cervical cancer is called the silent killer, because there are no symptoms until it’s too late. They save lives

No one enjoys them. That im aware of :joy:. But they are necessary. It doesn’t take long and could potentially save your life if anything is there

Smears are very important & even though you may think it’s not by just having a smear it could save your life, things like cervical cancer etc get detected from smears.
It’s important us women protect ourselves, please go for your regular routine smears :purple_heart:

You sound like a child tbh. Pap smears ARE necessary and things are found all the time so I’m not sure where you’re getting your information from. Go ahead, skip it and years down the road if something happens that could’ve been prevented from having one done ‘to protect your privacy, that’s on you!

My best friend of 5 babies didn’t do that and ended up with stage 3 cervical cancer which spread fast and we lost her 6 months latee. and now her babies are without their mama. :pensive: hope you get your pap and stay on top of it… you got a baby to think about.

Paper smear is to make sure you don’t have cancer or about your cell changes which can lead to cancer

Girl . How can you come here and ask for advise from people who most likely done have a medical degree and years of experience? You should taken yours doctor advice they’re there for a reason women. Like it’s not even that big of a deal to get one done. It’s takes less than 5min. But at the end of the day it’s your body your choice…

By the time you get symptoms and feel it ‘medically necessary’ to make an appointment then you could be too late. No one enjoys them and as a nurse I can assure you that no medical professional cares about anything down there other than the procedure and getting it done.

The way HPV has become so prevalent and causing cancer. Nope. You are not making a wise/good decision. But perhaps that’s what you do, idk. Get a pap smear, it’s quick and may ave your life one day. :expressionless:

It’s a doctors job to let you know that they are important, not painful and fast. She isn’t shaming you😂 it’s not a violation of privacy for a doctor to check your health. That’s literally why they are there!? There is a recommended amount of time between each Pap smear so her telling you that it’s due soon is just a fact. How old are you anyway?

I hate them and I used to avoid them but with being almost 40 I started doing them. However no man going in there. I make sure its a female.

Dude. Doctor is just trying to help you. Pap smears suck but they do catch things. A routine one saved a friend’s life. Get over yourself and just do it, for your own sake

You can refuse if you want but don’t blame the doctor :woman_shrugging:

A Pap Smear FOUND my ovarian cancer quickly enough that my Doctor was able to get it taken care of and it didn’t kill me. Better to be safe than sorry. I understand not wanting one BUT if it saves your life it is well worth it. Early detection is the reason I’m still here. While my Pap Smear was NOT painless (they had to do a biopsy) my doctor did prepare me for that. Get your Pap Smear !!

Well with respect god forbid but should you develop anything horrible you can’t go crying to your Dr when it’s too late when you go against advice an to be fair nothing is that intrusive you have given birth with lots of people at the business end,it could save your life.:kissing_heart:

I would impress on you the fact that you will need a healthy uterus and cervix to have another baby one day. Things can change and if you dont take care if what you have now, you may be denying yourself opportunities later, like life and more children.

Well you did just have a baby so I think that would be medically necessary to do. Take care of your body, after all it is important to maintain it. :slightly_smiling_face:

I get one every year but thats just me, I guess I hv to though bc one year they found hpv and I had to do a leep procedure to scrspe off cells but now just to make sure I don’t hv it anymore, been negative every year now but never know.

Well then who will be the first to complain that they got cervical cancer? You.

Absolutely silly and I applaud your doctor for the way she spoke to you.

Pap smears are medically necessary. If is not a violation of your privacy. It is sound medical advice. I am so over “my rights crap”. If you died because cervical cancer wasn’t picked up early enough I bet your family would sue the doctor for not making sure you had a test that could identify pre cancerous cells and treat them. Did you go to medical school to understand what is medically necessary. Doctors do not see you vagina as anything except a part of the body that needs to be cared for.

Surely this is a joke :joy:

They found precancerous cells in my cervix on one of my pap smears. Cervical cancer runs in my family so I always get my pap done.

Omg woman, a baby has just exited your vagina in front of midwives and you bleat about privacy reasons for not wanting to get a quick smear that could end up saving your life. That baby you’ve just given birth to should be enough of a reason to go and get that smear, imagine if you do end up with cells that change into cervical cancer, that baby will lose her mummy all for the sake of your pride being dinted. If you can spread your legs to birth a child you can do it for all of one minute to save your life!!

Years ago I got a Pap smear found out I had cancer sure saved my life

A pap smear is how a woman I know found out her cheating husband gave her HPV that turned to cervical cancer. She too thought they were superfluous. Until it saved her life.

I would imagine as a new mom your vision is to spend a lifetime enjoying ur child grow and mature. Preventative Healthcare allows parents the opportunity to mitigate a poor outcome. A pap is designed to detect cervical cancer. Routine pap smear can find a cancer early decreasing the likelihood of death, an unfortunate interruption of the vision for u and your child

You just had a baby right? The pap after birth is always a good thing to make sure everything is ok.

Speaking from someone who had had many abnormal Paps, yes I feel they are very important. I actually had to read this twice, it’s a little ridiculous

It’s the best way to have early detection for things and to see if you have any issues. It’s not a violation and it is important. If you choose not to do it and take your chances that’s your own choice and you and your family can live with the consequences. You don’t wait till you have symptoms of something like cancer cause by then it might be too late or very difficult to treat. And yes the doctor explaining to you that it’s important and should be done is not shaming and is a perfectly reasonable way to speak to a patient.

A pap smear is medically necessary. If you had cervical cancer or cancerous cells that’s how they would find out. If you have had a baby you should definitely be getting them yearly. If I had not went since I turned 15, I would have never knew about my cancerous cells in my cervix

However necessary it is, consider this, for some women, it feels so invasive and demeaning, what you might think of simple becomes painful and distressing.

Not with getting a Pap smear but it happens a bunch when I was super fat and I just told my doctor “look I don’t care if I die and I’ll lose weight when I want.” She backed off after that so… the big thing is they work for us not the other way around.

I agree they r very important I avoiding mine for 3 yrs then finally got it they do catch things and the sooner they can’t then the better. It’s not invasion of privacy when they want u to be healthy inside abd out.

I have friends that a pap found pre cancer and she went every 6 months after that and then turned to cancer so removed cervex then it had already spread and just had a hysterectomy and she is in her 30’s. Single mom with a tween

If you’re not worried about hpv, cervical, uterine or ovarian cancer then don’t, but it’s your doctor’s job to recommend it, because those diseases are real and most of the women it affects, never expected to get it. Best of luck.

Why were you at the drs when you seem to know better than them?

Look do not feel bad. Nor let anyone in this comments make you feel bad. I’m 45 and my youngest that I gave birth too is 24. I haven’t had a pap done since having her. It’s your body and if u don’t feel comfortable with getting one that is your right. It’s no one’s right to make u feel guilty of choosing not to get one. I have my reason to why I didn’t get one and want get one. But my reason are mine and yours is yours. Some say it’s not invasion of your privacy but it is. No one and I mean NO one knows the trauma that you may or may not have gone through in your earlier years of life. So you do what makes you comfortable not what other options are.

I didn’t get one for years but because I didn’t have insurance. Once I got insurance I had one done and they found cancer cells in my cervix. If I had waited much longer it would have been to late and I would have needed surgery. I’m still battling it, I had the pap they found the cells then I got a biopsy and then had to go back in and have all the cells removed. I went in 2 months ago for another pap to make sure they got everything and they still found more. I now have to wait 4 more months then go back in and get another pap and biopsy to see if the cells that are left are growing. I had I went and got my yearly pap they would have found the cells before it got bad. I had no symptoms or signs of having the cancer cells. I’m still not out of the woods on this. If they can’t get them all out on a second try then my doctor wants to do a hysterectomy and I still want another child so I may have ruined my chances for that.

Don’t get one and take the chance of something being wrong. If you are going to do the basic thing your doctor requests why go to the doctor?

I personally knew someone that did not go get her paps done and caught cervical cancer too late and passed away. I think it’s worth having done. Not sure why you don’t want to get it done, its painless.

I never got one (or saw an OB) until I was pregnant at 23. In fact, the only time I went to the dr after I gave birth was when I was pregnant again 2 years later. They’re now 4 & 6 and I haven’t been since my 6 week pp checkup. You have the right to refuse them and shouldn’t be made to feel guilty about it :woman_shrugging:t3:

They all have to be the voice of reason and advise you to do it annually. Have I in my 58 years forgotten and missed a year, yes. Do I have to face the coincidences if by skipping a year allowed bad things to happen. But life gets in the way. Feel bad then schedule your next one.

I think its a silly risk to take
