My doctor wasn't happy that I didn't get a pap smear: Advice?

You can refuse but did you know that if you wait till you have symptoms of cancer it is already in advanced stages and it may end your life!

It’s a preventative measure. You should listen to your doctor.

You get that with your hormones in FULL swing that anything can happen, right? Cysts, nodules, tumors, any number of things. They aren’t just pushing you to get something routine. They want to make sure that the surge of estrogen and hormones didn’t affect you in a poor way. So you have well gynecological health. I swear. Kids that don’t think things through, having kids.

A Pap smear is quick and relatively painless…. Your doctor is giving good and sound advice to you. Pap smears detect not only cancers but abnormal cells which down the road can develop into uterine cancer. I was grateful to have had a Pap smear where abnormal cells were detected…. I was one of the fortunate ones who only required laser to have the cells removed. I am thankful to have had the test and I am sure my daughter, husband, family, friends and grandchildren are too. The old saying “Ignorance is bliss”…… not in this case….

They are medically necessary….I mean…this post is so bizarre.
No, it’s not comfortable and I agree that it definitely is invasive. But it’s one of those things that 100% should be done

If you’ve had a pap smear in the last 1-3 years and was normal, and have a history of normal paps then once every 3 years is fine, that is the schedule I’ve been on for the last 15+ years. If you haven’t had one recently or have had an abnormal pap you SHOULD get one. It’s not an invasion of privacy, it’s preventive care! You don’t want to go in years down the line and find out you have an advanced stage of cervical cancer do you? Isn’t that worse?

Pap smears aren’t fun but they are important. I encourage you to reconsider. I have family members who had cervical cancer detected in early stages that way and treated early, so they have been cancer free for years.

It’s called a preventative screening…had my sister decided one of her paps was not needed she wouldn’t be here today as it found that she had cervical cancer. This post almost seems too ignorant to be real.

I’ve had four children and never had a “DnC” and it never was suggested by my doctors.

Get checked. I had an abnormal pap smear 4 years ago and was told to get checked (didn’t have away to get in since I was told it), I just had a pap smear and waiting for the results. I’m hoping it comes back normal because if not they are going to have to do more tests. I’m partly nervous but I know I’ll be ok…

What is this?? If not for having paps like you are supposed to, the abormal cells on my cervix very well would have turned cancerous and this was before i was 30. i was 25 actually. So i would have died or could have died from cervical cancer before 30 just because i was dumb and said ohhh this pap that saved my life is not medically necessary. You are an idiot.

Per the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology: ages 21-29, a pap is recommended every 3 years. Ages 30-65 a pap is recommended every 3 years without HPV testing and 5 years with HPV testing that comes back negative. Some providers may recommend an annual pelvic or pap if something is wrong. I work in a family practice clinic, and these are the guidelines the providers follow. Some OB/GYNs prefer to do paps yearly.

I had someone who did not get one for about 9 years, had cancer later stage was not detected soon enough and died.

It’s not shaming, what she said was right.

If you wait to go to the doctor when it’s obvious that it’s “medically necessary” for a lot of things you’ll be coming in way too late and limit your treatment options. Especially when it comes to female reproductive health in a lot of cases by the time we show symptoms whatever it is has progressed pretty far.

If you’re willing to roll the die as to whether you’ll be around for your kids it really is your choice, but you can’t be upset that your doctor thinks that’s a foolish decision. They would not be doing their job if they didn’t communicate with you medical recommendations. If you’re really adamant perhaps finding a provider that doesn’t believe in preventative medicine might be a better fit.

All women need to have a regular pap smear test
For their own health

They are no different to having an examination during labor

It’s better to have a test then to have to deal with endometriosis or cervical cancer

You don’t wait to vaccinate your children it is for preventative diseases so why not have a pap smear to make sure you are healthy. I was like you and hated going to the doctor and I ended up almost dying from severe endometriosis and with abnormal cells. Yes I wish I would have had a pap smear and maybe I would not have had to have a complete hysterectomy at a young age.

It’s a preventative screening. To make sure you don’t have any precancerous/cancerous cells and also can check for STD/STIs and other issues. It’s uncomfortable sure but it’s worth it if you can have peace of mind that everything is healthy down there. It only needs to be done every 3 years

It is called preventative measures. Not one woman likes it being done(the test), even my female Dr admitted it’s not fun but necessary. Girls have been given HPV vaccines since my daughter from since 12 yrs ago and is now available to boys as well. Boys pass that virus onto girls… Many, many moons ago my Aunt got Cervical Cancer and she was put in a bed with her legs widely apart so they could get the radiation into her for like 6 weeks! Go and get it done! Every time I have had a Pap smear done is different. I think the cervix is different on where you are in your cycle Get it done! Could save a lot of heartache in the end.

My sister in law passed away because she hadn’t gotten a papsmear in 5 plus years. By the time she went she was diagnosed with cervical cancer, within a few months it spread to her lung and stomach. She wasn’t even 30. Now if your paps ALWAYS come back negative and you’ve never had any abnormal paps you can go up to 3 years without getting one per the guidelines if that makes you feel better about not getting it often.

Catching cervical cancer early saves lives! Waiting until easily noticed problems are happening to get a pap smear literally could be the difference between life and death. I assume you want to be there for all the major milestones in your child’s life…

When I was 19 I had a pap smear after skipping one for 3yrs, they found precancerous cells on my cervix. Since then i NEVER miss one, especially after my grandmother passed away from uterine or cervical cancer, my mom also had cervical cancer

Had my sister gone back for her pap she may have still been with us. It may seem like they never find anything but they do…

A pap smear is used to take a sample of your cervical cells and test them for cervical cancer, HPV and possibly STDs if you are sexually active. It is most definitely an important part of preventional screening to protect you and take early intervention if something were to come up. Thankfully, you have not had friends or family suffer from any kind of disease or cancer or maybe they just don’t bring it up. Yes, it is personal and invasive but for a very good reason.

Pap smears are 100% medically necessary. It has saved me a few times in catching growing Cancer cells early. Not only that there can be issues after having a child. It’s highly recommended.

I’ve had cancer cells. You should always get checked. They’re already checking and doing, what’s one more little test and tbh after having kids it doesn’t really hurt at all anymore. I would do it,better safe and negative all the time then having one positive and that might be too late by then

You only have to get it once every few years, best to be safe than sorry.

You gonna sue the Dr when they don’t detect the cervical cancer early enough to save your life? No Dr want to go all up in your coochie. They aren’t doing it because they enjoy it. They’re trying to keep you safe from preventable cancers.

I think it’s up to you, but I believe they’re necessary. You can catch cancer earlier. I’d rather hear nothing is wrong rather than not having one for so many years, just to find out I’ve had cervical cancer for X amount of years.

pap smear is pretty important. very much necessary. I know it can be scary to get one but better to be safe than sorry. I know it caught my friends cancer cells early from a pap smear.

Having a pap after having a baby is very necessary, a pap in general is very necessary. They have detected my sister in law, aunt and mother’s cervical/uterine cancer. So yes, they are medically necessary, especially if you have children to raise :person_shrugging:

Why would you not want to get it done

So few people find anything wrong? It’s really the only way to detect cervical cancer before it’s very advanced . But hey, you do you, I believe in medical freedom even if that means you kill yourself unnecessarily :woman_shrugging:

I mean, you have every right to ask a doctor to not do something to your body.

But at the same time they have a moral obligation to let you know how important a Pap smear is for your health.

Early intervention is extremely important in finding any abnormalities in the cervix.

…cervical cancer is usually a relatively slow progressing cancer and a pap every few years helps catch it before it becomes cancer. I didn’t get one for 7yrs and they found abnormalities in mine. And I had my LEEP procedure done to remove them today.

Did a man post this because baebae that is crazy

It’s literally a cotton swab up the vag…what’s the big deal?If you can catch cancer early and prevent huge complications, is it not worth it? Food for thought, esp since you’re a mother and your child needs you. If you havent had baby yet, you’re in for a shock in the delivery room (granted its not a csection) and all the people looking at your cooter. As far as the doc goes, professionals should educate without belittling. Find a different one.

She should have just said her piece, on why and left it at that. And to shame you is bull💩. I had a doctor tring to push the HPV vaccin, because it showed up in my Pap; I told him I look into and never went back to him. While on the other had the best male doctor I had ( he moved to another state); said yes you are over weight, but when you are ready to lose it, we will work together. Didn’t shame or make any rude comments about it.
If you are not happy with her, find a new doctor.

In my experience I would definitely have one. I went 4 years without having one and ended having cervical cancer. Please ladies get your smear

Paps are very important. Cervical cancer can take a person out quick if it goes unnoticed. Please educate yourself on why you should get a pap. I had 2 in a years time because of past abnormalities. Doctors do not advise something they don’t stand behind. Paps are important!!!

Is this a real question? My advice is (Which is what you’re seeking out) tell your doctor to stop being emotional when his/her patients don’t do as requested/suggested when it comes to basic annual check ups. And then refer you to another doctor.

However, having a baby is more intrusive and they definitely get farther up in there than they do for a pap.

I get mine yearly like clockwork my great grandmother died of cervical/uteran cancer

Paps are for preventive measures. Cancer spreads quick especially the kind us ladies could potentially have. If caught early, it could save your life. I just lost a Aunt this week to uterine cancer.

This can’t be real, go get checked! 8 out of 10 people will contract HPV at some point and most will clear it on their own without even knowing they had it but who says your immune system will? You? It can take years to even show up. Those paps can show the slightest change that your doctor can keep and eye on and when caught early can prevent you from getting cancer.

I will just tell you my story. My son was born in a code c-section and sick. It was January. My six week check I was going to cancel the appointment (didn’t want to take my son out in the cold). So I went ahead and went for the 6 week post pap and check- they found cancer on that appointment- I had to have a hysterectomy. But I was able to raise my children (3). They check for a reason. Take care of yourself. Just another point of view.

Most of not all insurance carriers cover preventative care. Because it’s just that, preventative.
You shouldn’t be shamed for your personal medical choices, but so much, SO MUCH goes undiagnosed and a simple pap smear appointment could save you in the long run.
No one “likes” getting a pap. I sure hate it. But what I’d hate more is to never get one and find out years down the line that something was wrong and I’m too late to fix it, and worst case scenario need a hysterectomy.
In my opinion, a pap smear IS medically necessary.
