My mom got gastric bypass done and has completely changed in a bad way, help?

You should have her blood work done. Be sure she is getting all her vitamins, especially D. Vitamin D is necessary and if you are lacking in it, could bring on depression.

You said your mom was like this before the surgery “anxiety and depression all of her life”. So maybe she hasn’t changed as much as you think. You are just seeing it more now. If she has been seeing a psychiatrist all of her life and been on meds all of her life maybe the doctor needs to try her on different meds since her weight has gone down. Just an idea.

Sounds like menopause. Go to a women’s doctor. You might get the right help.

Second opinion…take her somewhere else to and ask questions

I’ve had the same surgery in 2020 and suffer from bipolar disorder. I know this greatly affects your body’s ability to absorb nutrients and everything else. She needs to be taking vitamins every day and probably needs to have her meds looked at and possibly changed. Good luck and God Bless!

How old is your Mom. A lot of people have been depressed over the past year and a half with the Covid scare. May have nothing at all to do with her surgery.

I don’t know how old your mom is, but is it possible she is suffering from early signs of dementia? Talk to her primary doctor or the psychiatrist about the emotional & mental changes she is having. The surgeon is only looking for physical problems related to the surgery.

You need to seek a group of people who have had the same surgery! I know someone who has gone the same thing! I feel so sad :disappointed:

I had the gastric bypass done 3 years ago, and your mind, body, and soul do go thru one hell of a change. Sometimes good, sometimes bad, what I was told to do is, journal about your feels for the day, meditation, and eat healthy. I know you have probably heard all this before, but I went from 600 pounds to 230 in three years. I have made some good and bad choices, but you move on, and after it’s all said and done , move on to a new day

To have this surgery you have to have a psychologist ok it. I would change and get another drs opinion at this point. Have her meds checked and make sure you explain what is going on with your mom. It’s important that the dr. Knows all the issues that she has. Good luck.

Sometimes you do not absorb all your meds after gastric bypass. All mine had to be uped after my surgery.

It is also very true that the body doesn’t absorb vitamins and minerals the same way after the surgery. Forever in some of them, others might be just temp.

Is her vitamin B12 low? That can occur with that surgery and low B 12 can cause sluggishness and memory loss. Does she take any meds for anxiety and depression if so they may not be absorbed properly

After losing my stomach to cancer I had low blood sugar. After figuring it out my moods were much better.

If I were you I’d get a second opinion. Does she have dementia or show signs. Also any medication changes.

Maybe her psych meds are off or she may have developed Bipolar disorder and is experiencing mania and extremely low mood swings. Have her psychiatrist check her blood to make sure her meds are at therapeutic level. Adjusting her medication can be life saving and make all the difference in her world. Best of luck to you both.

All i know is they don’t absorb vitamins properly. I think there are vitamins especially for those with gastric bypass. She is probably low on vitamins D and B12 and Iron.

Check her meds. Sounds to me like an adverse medicine reaction. If you can’t do that, find a pharmacist or nurse who knows their stuff and get her off what’s setting her off. Better to replace meds with vitamins and minerals. God bless her

I had the surgery in 2008. I lost alot of weight but that’s not yhe only thing that changes. Ur entire life changes. Ur way of thinking changes and ur moods change. I would suggest talking to her about her vitamins. If she’s not taking them they could change her mood. I know it sounds weird but her body needs them. She doesn’t get them from food anymore. Also talk to hwr about changes she wasn’t expecting. The drs didn’t tell me everything back when I had mine. I lost 2/3 of my hair, became lactose intolerant, anemic and hypoglycemic. They were an unpleasant surprise. She may need to talk to someone about all the changes she is experiencing and how to handle them.

It is common with that surgery. The rapid change is hard on people. What they can’t have anymore as things don’t always sit well…

She needs to have her thyroid checked. The thyroid not functioning correctly can cause all of the things you mentioned.

Sounds like early onset dementia and/or bipolar due to anxiety from the prospect of surgery. Get her another mental health and doctor for a second opinion

Many things can cause her to be on an emotional roller coaster. The first of which is that someone becomes morbidly obese because of food addiction. Binge eating certain foods creates chemical reactions in the brain much the same as street drugs/pharma. Gastric bypass takes that away literally overnight and makes it (nearly) impossible to indulge in that way. Often this creates patients to turn to other substances. Then there is the very likely probability she is experiencing vitamin deficiency. She should have a full blood lab work up checking them, anemia (low iron) and vitamin b deficits can cause much of what you are describing. She should be in a support group with other Gastric patients. It takes a LONG time to come out of the other side of that surgery, the first couple years in particular are extremely difficult emotionally. I strongly urge you to point your mom in the direction support groups! There are several groups here on FB and most likely will be some locally where she can go in person. Sometimes it just helps to know the things you are going through are shared by others.

The state of my emotions was vastly and permanently improved after bypass. It was like being let out of a prison. No guarantees after but eminently many more happy success stories than negative. Maybe her problems would have come anyway. My life changed completely and I am sure for the better. mine, a success story even after twenty years.

What does her psychiatrist say about her condition now? Maybe get a new psychiatrist. And keep looking till she finds one that is very knowledgeable & one she really likes! That may make the difference.

Is she in pain? Constant pain will do this to you.

My mom gets that way when her sodium levels are real low

My boss became a raging alcoholic after this surgery. Unless you heal what is causing the over eating in the first place … that illness will manifest itself in other ways.
Perhaps 12 step program such as Overeaters Anonymous … they use their program to help recognize why you turned to food In The first place.
I will pray for your mother❤️

It maybe caused by some of the medicine she is taking , look at the side effects of all her medicines, check with the pharmacist and make sure none are intersecting with the other medicine.

I ate ice chips non stop for months until they figured out that taking iron orally didn’t work for me. I had Pika. They gave me an iron infusion and I have not had that problem again. Although I am starting to enjoy the ice again!

Have her meds checked out, I am a person that has had this surgery went through alot we will change our editions from food to something else. You need to check meds first everything affects use faster and more harsh.

My sister and I both had gastric bypass surgery and I did pretty well the first couple of years. Did everything by the book. Then I only took the vitamins when I remembered and didn’t always feel very good. Didn’t think vitamins could cause so much. Now my sister on the other hand did not do well. She took her vitamins but they did not absorb. She was constantly chewing ice, always down, no energy and one day she was so dizzie and could hardly stand on her own. My mom took her to the doctor and they transported her to the hospital as she was about to have a heart attack. She was in her 30s. She had the lowest levels of vitamin B, Iron and Vitamin D. She had to get it all in a IV and to this day she still gets shots and through a IV. Which I have as well. I can’t eat enough food to get the proper vitamins and pills don’t absorb like they did before. So I would say your mom has some vitamin issues going on as well as maybe some of the other things that the comments say. I was fat my whole life and always thought being thin would make my life better. Not much was different except I was thin. But I don’t regret having the surgery and it was difficult at times to not be able to eat like most everything. It’s been 20 years since I had the surgery and like I said I still have vitamin issues and I still can’t eat certain things. Well I can but then I have to suffer the consequences. Such as milk will make me so sick but every now and then I have to have a cold glass of milk. It’s alot of learning what you can eat or not. It took me years to eat more than a few bites. I went from a size 26 to a 6. It’s a amazing adjustment in every aspect of your life. I had to take classes before I could have the surgery. Just about everything I felt and went through is what I was taught or told. I had a amazing doctor. I don’t think that they require these days what I had to do before the surgery. It was pretty new when I got mine. They were very thorough. I had to take nutrition classes, had a psych evaluation. Met with my doctor 3 different times and he showed me 2 times what he was going to do and the 3rd time I had to show him what he was going to do. I had to fully understand what was going to happen to me physically and mentally. It was about 9 months of learning. The one thing that I didn’t really think was going to happen that he said was that I won’t ever throw up very much if even at all. I haven’t thrown up in 20 years. Not when I had the flu, ate too much or hung over. Not once. I am sure everything will work out with your mom as soon as she gets those vitamins in order and some time to adjust to all the changes. It’s a lot!

She thought this would make her life better, no she’s having doubts on top of what she’s been through. Talk to her

Hmmm welllll I feel like it kinda sucks the life outta some people… hard to explain and the only g to Hong you could really do is be supportive as she readjusts…

Could be covid depression? Many people have had a hard time with the social separation.

Has she had covid? This will happen several months after you have it, that is only one of the things that will happen.

Make sure it’s not one of her medications (if she’s on any) causing it. My mom fell a couple months ago, had several broken ribs and a brain bleed. While she was in the hospital they changed all her medications around and she started acting super confused which was scary with the brain bleed. Took her to her regular dr that got her back on the right stuff and she completely went back to normal.

Get to Dr who did surgery and/or her pcp for a blood work up

2nd opinion!! If you’re that unsettled about it, you should let her see another doctor first.

Is she on gabapentin for pain?

Does she have seizures?

How old is your mother?

I didnt even have them preexisting conditions and after weight loss surgery i feel the same way

Her meds may need adjustment

She needs blood work and checked for a uti.

Maybe see her pcp they can give her a prescription to help her

Get a new psychiatrist to start it may be her medication

Pray for her ask the Lord to heal her, front to back top to bottom side to side In Jesus Name and thank you Lord

I agree it may be her meds. I have 2 Rx that I can’t take together, major bitchy

Your mom I need a support group take to our new doctor or maybe is menopause

You know what her meds could be to high of a dose. I was like that .I told my dr n she lowered my meds

A friend of mine had this surgery and went through the slow movement and seemingly like she wasn’t all there. Turned out to be blood clots. Get her checked out by a different doctor.

You haven’t provided enough information for anyone to give a truly helpful opinion. It sounds to me like she’s had hormonal problems all her life and now as she’s getting older, the long term effects of hormonal imbalance has taken its toll

My friend has some issues after hers

Her mental issues are not stemming from gastric bypass… she needs new meds. Her body has drastically changed.

Talk to her psychiatrist and explain her changes. She sounds like she needs a new anti depressant.

Feed her. She may be hungry most of the time.

Maybe you should get a full body CT.

Maybe go with her to the psychiatrist? Try to not get overwhelmed by her Struggles because that’s what she is going through. Struggles. Encourage her to go out with you and help her meet people. Give it time. It’s your mother.

Take her to a new doctor, have you expressed to your mom your concerns

So many potential solutions to persue & so much encouragement. Wonderful responses.

Alcoholics are common after bypass

Deidra Vontoure Peters

Anti depression meds

Typically people who undergo this surgery have serious psychological problems to start out with. She obviously was not a good candidate because of her problems.

She needs a new psychiatrist.

:thinking::thinking::thinking:

Sounds like side effects of 1 or more of the meds she is on!

I would talk to the PHARMACIST!
Tell him what is going on, have him pull up the list of meds she is on… THEN ask him if any of the meds could be causing this.

Side Note
YES! I said Pharmacist, NOT the Dr. Because a Pharmacist knows MORE about medicine than a Dr does!!!

Did she quit taking her meds?

So sad pray  for her

Get an attorney to file for medical power attorney.

Has she had a complete mark up for the vitamins and minerals in her body? She may be deficient in something as having the gastric bypass surgery stops the body from absorbing important nutrients from food. They’re all important but magnesium and potassium are extremely important to her overall well-being.

Morbidly obese people have eating disorders much like being a drunk or drug addict. She can’t “use” her drug of choice-food to medicate/comfort/distract herself. You can NOT underestimate the effects. Get Everything checked. Hormones, vitamin/nutrition/psychiatric evaluation.

It’s possible vitamin deficiencies
Because after surgery they tell them take Flintstones vitamins
And biotin
Because adsorption problems alit of time their hair will thin that’s why need biotin
They have to eat small portion

It’s real important she get blood work to see what’s going on with her

This surgery probably saved her life. So, when your mom was struggling internally with her issues but was the life of the party she was fine? I don’t get it. Depending on age, she could have early onset dementia or a number of things! Have her PCP do a referral to a Neurologist and see what is going on in her head.

I wish I had some words of wisdom about this horrible situation, but sadly I don’t. This is heartbreaking I can only imagine how your mom must feel and you as well. The only thing I know to do or say is I will pray for you guys. I’m so sorry :disappointed: :pray:t3::pray:t3::pray:t3::pray:t3::pray:t3::pray:t3::broken_heart:

Was she on medication for the depression and anxiety before the surgery? If so, she has lost weight and her stomach is absorbing things differently, therefore the dosages should be re-evaluated. She might be getting too much of her medication now……

Its sad to say but these surgery do this to people not everyone is mentally prepared they dont give you enough time to think of the big change in your life forever . And this pandemic dont help either , i would say have her talk to a therapist  wish u the best

Stay strong my friend x❤️x

She suffered with depression ( as you say ) all her life! Was the gastric bypass really needed? Was she obese? Look my opinion as RN is : if she was happy go lucky and her size didn’t matter for her then the gastric bypass wasn’t needed. I have one friend who had gastric bypass and his personality changed. He exchanged one addiction to food to addiction to alcohol. Lately he was put on antidepressants and it seems it’s working. He lost so much weight and maybe the body shape change and the loose skin are very depressing. Also luck of specific nutrients in the body is making your mom that way.
Maybe she needs infusions of extra vitamins , minerals and nutrients. Just a thought.

Gastric bypass results in vitamin and nutrient deficiencies. The B vitamins are vital for mental health, particularly B12. Start dosing her up. Best wishes.

If your mum is loosing weight it my be different to what sh thought. As the weight comes off your body changes your fat falls off and starts your skin wobbling and you feel gross your legs your stomach, your bum you wave your arm and it keeps waving. You do not feel sexy, fun this is not what you expected. But you do not have the money to get the excess taken off. You hope it just gets better you are embarrassed you did not know this was going to happen you feel you have made a big mistake.

Maybe get to the real root of her mental health problems before you go around filing lawsuits. My mother had gastric bypass and it lifted her up mentally.

Sounds like she needs a meds adjustment. Is she taking a multivitamin?

Maybe the meds need adjusting because of the weight loss and loss of nutrients etc
Also as someone has had been through a very tough surgical procedure ( not the same kind ) maybe she needs to talk it out therapy or counseling not just meds from a psychiatrist . They can be great but a lot are quick to hand meds out and sometimes it just takes talking it out and expressing what you feel with someone not in your circle
I don’t think the people that did the surgery are to blame . And even though the psychiatrist cleared her she isn’t necessarily to blame either
Unfortunately everyone reacts different to things like surgeries etc
Best of luck

Depression due to anesthesia. I had this happen to me. It doesn’t happen often but it does and you may want to have it looked into. Every time I have anesthesia I have this problem. Thankfully, I had a doctor who knew about this.
