My six month old is choking on mucous, how can I help her?

NoseFrida! :100::100::100: The BEST item I bought when I had my last baby! Heā€™s 3 now and there are times I wish I still had it.:woman_facepalming:t3:

Saline drops and nose sucker, ask for a blue inhaler and mast as itā€™ll break the mucus down so she can bring it up better

Take. Her. To. The. Doctor.

Put some fresh garlic in her nose (cut to her size)ā€¦. Leave for about 15 mins and it will take all the boogers out. They will just run out of her nose once you remove the garlic after the 15 mins

Stop any dairy and raise her up when sleeping

Even though you spoke to the drs nurse, you may want to get her checked out. Could be whooping cough or something similar.

Use ur mouth and pull out the cold for ur child noseā€¦ whatā€™s the problem. Thatā€™s what I did for all my kidsā€¦

Sit baby up, cup your hand and pat her back starting at the lower back until you reach the shoulders, repeat this for several minutes. If you have a massager or something that vibrates, you can use that instead and it works better. You want her to cough, if sheā€™s not coughing it up then she canā€™t get it out and it can turn into pneumonia. The humidifier is loosening the junk in her lungs and making her cough it up, itā€™s not making it worse, itā€™s just the process of clearing the airway. Vicks calms it down but it makes the junk stay in the lungs. Continue using the humidifier, it will get better the more she coughs junk out.

Hot shower in the bathroom for a sauna effect, try using Nadal syringe if thereā€™s anything you can get out. Pray. Iā€™ll pray for you baby too. I hate it when babies are sick like that, itā€™s so heart breaking

Turn shower on hot hot ans steam up your bathroom.
What about this med? Itā€™s natural stuff, my cousin used it for her baby

I am from Pakistan and we use home remedies. To cut down mucous we dip the tip of pacifier in honey and let the baby suck it.
Or if the baby doesnā€™t take pacifier we use fingerā€™s tip.

And tiny noses saline drops. Mine are older so there was no nose Frieda then just the regular ol snot sucker from the hospital

Benadryl dries up mucus

Try source eucalyptus leaves. Hang a bunch in thee bathroom under the shower head or under the hot tap, this opens the airways in the most natural way. Also, in SA we have a product acc200, which disolves in water, and it helps break down the mucus and baby should be able to get it out. Learn cupping with your hands, and give his a bit of physo at night before bed. My. Now 11 year old was inundated with chest and sinus infections as a baby. I also learnt baby reflexology for my sonā€™s colic. All these little things help the baby and you get some sleep :sleeping:.
Good luck

One of those baby snot suckers

I use the use the Frida Nose Sucker and sit them up. I also found sitting in the bathroom for about 20 minutes with the steam running helps a lot. The humidifiers wouldnā€™t help. My baby boy was only a 3-4 weeks old when he first got sick and this was the ONLY thing that helped. I have 5 kids so itā€™s damn near impossible keeping my baby boy not sick. Itā€™s stressful, but thatā€™s all I could do. He threw up what I couldnā€™t get because he was just too little. Last year, my other son got RSV at 3 months exactly and I did the same thing with him. I basically donā€™t sleep when theyā€™re sick or if I do, I only sleep when everyone else is awake to wake me up if he needs his nose sucked or isnā€™t sitting up right like I try to have him.

Right there with ya! My sweet babes has the daycare bug and is coughing because of mucus. Iā€™ve been sleeping with her in the chair (sheā€™s 14 months) and steam showers! Also my grandma used to say to cut an onion and put on bottom of feet with socks? I mean worth a shot lol! Good luck momma!ā€™its rough when babes is sick

Those nose suckers the hospital have are amazing for getting snot out of their noses.

Roll her on her tummy cup your hand and pat her back

The dr or hospital can use saline up one nostril and suck it out the other side. It works wonders!

Take it out with the lil round green buger sucker

Sounds like an allergic reaction try zyrtec and write down what she eats and start eliminating things individually until you see progress

Tigers Balm on the bottom of the babyā€™s feet. An old trick from a Vietnamese friend!

Make an appointment to see the Dr. Donā€™t just talk to the nurse on the phone. She needs to be examined. Steam baths work wonders. Put some of the Vicks in the bathtub. Run the shower as hot as it will get. Sit with her in the steamed up bathroom for 10-15 minutes or as long as sheā€™ll tolerate. Use saline spray in the nose & a bulb syringe to get as much as you can out. She will most likely fight you. Itā€™s neccasary to help her though. Put Vicks on her feet & cover with socks or booties that are hard for her to pull off. (I know easier said than done.) I had to do this routine with my oldest a million times. He was eventually diagnosed with asthma & put on preventative meds. You have to be her advocate & demand that they test her for allergies & asthma. I knew my son was asthmatic at 2mos. He was about 5yo when he was finally diagnosed. His 3rd Dr finally agreed with me & sent him to an allergy specialist. I was advised not to use a humidifier. They breed mold which makes it worse (heā€™s allergic to mold). It may also be a milk intolerance. Another thing Iā€™ve had trouble with drs diagnosing. Talk to a dietitian. They canā€™t diagnose her. They can help you identify if itā€™s a milk allergy & guide you on how to help her.

My doctor told me that vics just creates more mucus. He also recommended to not use a booger sucker more than necessary. My 9 month old chokes all the time. He has since the day he was born, I use a booger sucker and suck out his throat when heā€™s choking which usually helps get the clumps of mucus out and ends the choking fits faster

At that age , I remember many nights where Iā€™d find a safe spot where I can just hold my little ones upright on my chest, just so they could sleep a little. I found that was the only way weā€™d get some sort of rest, pillows to prop you in a comfy position, and if you have a moon pillow for safety as a barrier for baby not to droop forward. thermos with a warm drink for you. Skin to skin helps and massaging her back with an oil safe for her age helps too. Itā€™ll take a little time, but sheā€™ll be OK mama youā€™ve got this.

Try giving her some real lemon juice you might have to sweeten it with honey it helps to back up mucus for adults you can add a shot of vodka

Talk to your doctor - not his nurse, he can order some tests.

Run a hot shower until steamy and stay in the bathroom with the little one and they will sneeze the mucus out.

Nose frida, they also have baby bath bombs that help with congestion, and elderberry syrup!! You can pick some up at Whole Foods!

Just heard on the news - there is something called RSV kids R getting - normally a problem in winter but having cases now - can B serious!! U need to take youā€™re little one to doctor

Nose Frida and a new suction/bulb for nose but Iā€™d use in side of mouth to suck out excess in mouth but not throat. Like between gums and cheeks.
During coughing lay baby on stomach on your thighs/legs and make a cup with your hands and pat throughout lung area.

Perhaps change doctors?

Take your baby to a physio, they can do suctionā€¦ thatā€™s what I did for my baby

We had congestion issues with my son when he was younger, we switched his formula & that helped. He would get all chocked up all the time & had lots of congestion.

There is a product called Hydrasense baby. This is game changer. Every parent who has infants or toddlers should have one of these. I was apprehensive at first, my bestie convinced me to buy it, best decision ever.

They gave me zyrtec for my almost 5 year old and 10 month oldā€¦the coughing would not stopā€¦it helped but honestly I think it was just a viral cold that went Away

With Drā€™s advice you could try nasal douchingā€¦

Fess and also keep the cot or bassinet up helps or even bouncer

Onions on the feet with socks too!

Put a pillow under his crib mattress to try and prop him up a little while sleeping. When you lay flat, everything just settles and causes irritation.

Itā€™s RSV season. How long is this been going on? Maybe they need to test for RSV

Please get second opinion. Yes RSV is real and itā€™s really dangerous if not taking care of. These Dr should know that . The no fever maybe why but I would go to ER. Hot shower steam. No milk products. It makes mucus worse. Prayers  :pray:

At this age, saline nasal spray and lots of suctioning. Plus, Iā€™ve seen a few people recommending giving honey. DO NOT give your baby honey. Babies under a year old cannot have it. It can make them very sick.

Please check that itā€™s not the RSV virus. I have had my baby by a Dr last week and they diagnosed her wrongā€¦ Had to rush her back to the Dr on Wed and so my baba has RSV and she is 10 months old. Plzz go to another Dr and get a second opinion. Itā€™s not something to play with

Chop up a brown onion put on a flat plate and cover it in sugar glad wrap the while plate up place in the fridge over night and you will be left with onion juice :ok_hand: give this to her about 2-3mls when needed it helps lose the phlegm and prevents the chocking on it  used this on my 6 month old when she was all stuffed up and chocking on her phlegm also cleared it up within a few days and after a few doses she wasnā€™t gagging on her phlegm.

Give gentle slaps on her back and sides with hands like a cup (called cupping method) or massage vigourously with mustard oil in your hands heated over a candleā€¦ the oil warm oil does make an action to loosen the phlegmā€¦ i grew up with that as well as my kidsā€¦ my mom and i had to do it all the time and it actually worked best than any medication

Hard to handle in hot weather but run steamy hot shower and sit in bathroom with her so she can breathe in the steam. I hope she feels better soon.

I agree with Kym A great thing to do is sit with her in the bathroom run the shower hot so itā€™ll steam up the whole bathroom while the water is running put a little of vics under the running water careful hot water and just sit there with baby for like five minutes to let her nose run letting the mucus thin out helped my baby breath better while she slept. Also suchion before sleeping it great too bathing in warm water with vic works wonders

Keep doing the humidifier because what will happen if it stays in her lungs is a lot worse than choking.
Iā€™d have them do the RSV JUST IN CASE.

And prop her up when she sleeps so it doesnā€™t drain into her lungs more.

Suck out babies nose.

Maybe take your child to a doctor since it sounds like they need antibiotics

Try a warm shower let warm water hit back and back of neck even if you have to get in with. Do every few hours if possible. Keep doing humidifier keep it coming out as much as possible you want it to stay out of lungs+

Put 2-3 drops of saline water in her nose and use a bulb syringe to suction out her thick mucous. Or ask if they can send you a portable suction machine. I hope your baby feels and gets better soon! :sparkling_heart:

Ask your doctor about using a nebulizer

The thing that worked best for my baby was a hot steam shower. Close your smallest bathroom, run the shower on pure hot, sit on the toilet with your baby. He will cough and gag and sound like he is choking but once he vomits the mucus out, he and mommy will both feel better. Hope your little one is better soon. :blue_heart:

Saline drops and massage her chest

Place on nelly and cry a bit

When my son was young, every cold turned into a runny nose, coughing and choking, and then evolving into severe ear infections. The best way that I was able to get him some relief, was to run the shower with the bathroom door closed, and the hot water making steam. You said that youā€™re using a humidifier, so this is somewhat similar. Does either one work better or worse? Iā€™d call the doctor and have her seen. Breathing isnā€™t something that should be taken lightly. Prayers to you and your family. I hope that she feels better soon! :purple_heart::blue_heart::purple_heart::blue_heart::purple_heart::blue_heart::purple_heart::blue_heart::purple_heart::blue_heart::purple_heart::blue_heart::purple_heart::blue_heart:

I use Zarbees and the nose freida

Steam shower, works wonders, the snot runs right out of there nose, my son has bronchitis ATM & this has helped him a lot, plus extra clothing & vix on the chest & feet covered with socks

Asda vapour Bath before bed

You shouldnā€™t be using vicks itā€™s too strong for her age. Not sure where you are but they make a baby version called Snuffle babe.

Do all the above then put onions in his socks when u put him to bed ,socks have to hold onions in place so they have to fit tight

Zarbees chest rub, take her in a bathroom and turn on both your sink tub to the hottest setting. Let that bathroom steam girl, youā€™ll know itā€™s working when she starts coughing and canā€™t stop. At that point you take the nose cleaner they give you when their small (the suction type of one) angle the tip of it towards the side of her throat and suck it up when sheā€™s coughing hard. I had to do this when my son was 2 months old was extremely sick with something. He could barley breath, I was exhausted and it took a couple days. But man, once it was over he was bouncing and happy. Also zarbee has some wonderful products. Pick up some saline spray as well, itā€™ll help clear out her air waysā¤ļø xoxo mama

Nose frida. You can get it on Amazon for $10. It is disgusting conceptually, but there are filters and blocks to prevent anything going in your mouth. Itā€™s super effective though, lol, and the only downside is that my husband gags seeing the snot come out.

Saline drops have also helped my babies. A couple saline drops left to stew, then a sneeze later, their noses are clear. You will have to wipe up a lot of snot.

Suck it out for her. It sounds gross but it works.

Mucolytic suppositories work wonders. Depends on where you are, they are usually considered over the counter and dont need prescriptions

Pillow wedge to elevate her

My daughter was diagnosed with acid reflux after a spell like thatā€¦ that landed us in the emergency because she couldnā€™t breath. The mucous build could be from her underdeveloped GI. Or if youā€™re breast feeding it could be something your eating affecting the milk in the tummy. Also try steam from a hot shower to open airways. Xx

Suck her nose out and use the wipes by Nose Frieda I think itā€™s called. They help. They do make a baby cough and mucus relief by zarbeeā€™s we use for our baby girl every once in awhile. I am the same way with a humidifier it always makes it so much worse for me. Also have her allergies looked into. Good luck momma!!! Hope she feels better soon!!!

try a cool-mist vaporizer, soft tapping on her back to help break up phlegm, mucus.

Put a spoon of vics into some boiling water, set it in the bathtub, set a chair in the bathroom & turn on the shower on just hot water. The goal is to steam up the bathroom with the vics. The snot will pour out of the baby.

Sounds like rsv my daughter did this at 6 months old

Baby saline helps thin mucus. Also drink plenty of liquids. I know sheā€™s 6 months but she can have some water or pedialyte. Also vicks isnā€™t supposed to be used at her age especially not on her. It sounds as though you are keeping to much moisture in the air. Sometimes constantly running a humidifier will make you more stuffy. Ohā€¦ and also you can try and get a baby wedge. It elevates the head slightly to help with drainage that way it not just sitting at the back of the throat.

This is probably the last thing to try or probably not at all, but has anyone seen those TikTok videos weā€™re older people clear their nose by putting garlic cloves up there ? (Only suggested cause itā€™s not medicine and I havenā€™t heard of garlic being one do do anything harmful)

Help a mama out and respond anonymously on our forum. My six month old is choking on mucous, how can I help her?

When my girls and I have a cough with mucus I make a paste with flour, extra virgin olive oil, raw honey, and grated ginger root. Put it on the chest with gauze or paper towels and medical tape for 3-4 hours. Helps get rid of mucus and cough.

I would use a nebulizer with saline and give her warm safe herbs like boiled camomile to help her get rid of mucus stuck in her throat. Keep repeating every couple of hrs of so

Steamed bathroom!!! My daughter had croup 5 times by 2Ā½ yoā€¦ also vicks on her feet then put socks on them. Tomorrow morning go to a pharmacist you trust, ask them about that is available OTC for a young child. If they donā€™t have anything, call your Dr. God bless you & your family.

She is dehydrated so the mucous and phlegm is thick. Give her lots of water. Iā€™m not sure if babies can digest lemon water it breaks down the phlegm but check with your doctor. Best yet take her to the doctor so they can suction it out and clear her lungs. The worst thing to ever happen you feel like you cant breathe. Take her to emergency

I would see a Dr it could be rsv. She only a baby so some if these ideas could be dangerous. It might be she needs antibiotics. I would keep her in a more upright position. There is a baby decongestant not vicks sorry forget its name!

Vickā€™s on the bottom of their feet and socks. A nasal aspirator and I did nasal saline drops in their nose as well. Seems to help clear the mucous. However, if your baby is really congested in their chest and it hasnā€™t improved, a trip to the ER would be safest.

Sounds like you need a DE-humidifier instead. Dry out the nasal passages, dry out the sinuses. Best for allergies and bronchitisā€¦you donā€™t want to create a damp, moldy environment. Makes it worse.

Little ones are different than old folks, but besides vicks, I use and expectorant cough syrup for my problems. Check with your dr to see if there is anything like that for young children.

That baby needs to be seen by a doctor. It could be a minor cold, could be asthma or bronchitis. Get to the emergency room tonight!

If you can get her to drink some pineapple juice it helps thin the mucus and spit out and goes away. It takes time so be safe an have patience. If you get tired donā€™t be afraid to ask for help, mom, auntā€™s & friends and nurses. Donā€™t give up come back and let us know how sheā€™s doing and how youā€™re doing.

Put a slice of potato or onion on the chest. Cover. Leave on while they sleep ( or try too). Hope this helps.

They have vapo steam that you can put in the shower. They work really well. Also, donā€™t give her dairy, thatā€™ll make it worse.

If you have a wax warmer instead of putting in wax put Vicks vapor rub. Put it in her room and close the door. It will fill her room with the vapor without having to rub it on her since she is so young and will help clear her up. I did this with my twins since they canā€™t have medicine that young.

When my babies had mucous,I set a carseat/babyseat in their crib and had them sleep in that.It cradled them and kept their body at an angle with head elevated.Enabled them to sleep without choking.

This may be acid reflux. Elevate the head of her bed. Of stomach acid is coming up into the esophagus, it will increase mucous production. I would have her checked for acid reflux.
