QUESTION:
"My 2-year old’s cheeks started turning really red tonight after dinner. He ate, and his father cleaned his hands and face with baby wipes (the same brand we have been using for the last year with no problems).
The first person to notice it was my mom; his left cheek was only a little red by his mouth. It was so faint though that I thought it might have been from him leaning on his hand or something of the sort. Then his other cheek started getting red too, and now both cheeks are hot to the touch.
I gave him some children’s allergy medicine and had been putting a cool tag on his face to cool him down. His forehead isn’t hot, and he isn’t running a fever. I Googled red hot cheeks and got nothing but Fifth Disease, but he doesn’t have any other symptoms other than those two.
At what point should I begin to worry this may be something serious? Or can someone recommend something to help him out? His father thinks someone may have touched his face with something on their hands, but nobody can remember what it may be."

TOP ANSWERS (AS SELECTED BY MODERATOR):
“My oldest did that with ranch. Her face would only be red where the ranch touched. She doesn’t do it anymore so I’m assuming she grew out of it.”
“My kids get a red face wherever spaghetti sauce touches it, or anything else super acidic. My face turns super red when I eat quinoa. It is probably what he ate.”
“My daughter’s face used to turn bright red after she had sauce (any sauce, tomato, brown, Mayo, etc.) If the sauce got on her face she looked like she had a rash wherever I’d wipe it off from.”
“I can use baby wipes with no issues for weeks. I can also use them the next day and my skin goes bright red and really hot. Sounds like a reaction to the wipes, just stop using them.”
“My niece used to get the same reaction when she ate Ranch. Best to go to the doctor and find out about potential allergies.”
“My son’s cheeks get red if he eats tomatoes. I would see if it was the food that gave him that reaction or the baby wipes. But definitely talk to your pediatrician.”
“Usually that’s an allergic reaction. My son has it when he eats red dye or sauce. I would recommend talking with a doctor.”
“My boys do that with ketchup or tomato-based things, but also if he had strawberries or blueberries it could be a slight allergic reaction. Or anything new, but those 2 things, in particular, came to mind.”
“Food allergy, my son’s face around his mouth and cheeks would get bright red when eating anything with eggs, milk, soy, peanuts… So we had to avoid all that till after 2 and then we slowly started to reintroduce them.”
“What was dinner? Certain foods turn my son’s and my face red just because we’re pale. We both love spicy food but get bright red when we eat it. Even things like paprika make us red. It’s not an allergy, it’s just from being pale.”
“That happens to my babe with ranch sauce but we just have a bath and put lotion on and she’s fine by the next day. It doesn’t seem to bother here. It could have been a combination of irritation and the wipes, I’d just monitor it! If it gets worse, call your dr and take note of what he ate and see if it happens again the next time he eats it.”
