My Toddler's Cheeks Turned Hot Red After He Ate But I Can't Figure Out What Caused It: Advice?

QUESTION:

"My 2-year old’s cheeks started turning really red tonight after dinner. He ate, and his father cleaned his hands and face with baby wipes (the same brand we have been using for the last year with no problems).

The first person to notice it was my mom; his left cheek was only a little red by his mouth. It was so faint though that I thought it might have been from him leaning on his hand or something of the sort. Then his other cheek started getting red too, and now both cheeks are hot to the touch.

I gave him some children’s allergy medicine and had been putting a cool tag on his face to cool him down. His forehead isn’t hot, and he isn’t running a fever. I Googled red hot cheeks and got nothing but Fifth Disease, but he doesn’t have any other symptoms other than those two.

At what point should I begin to worry this may be something serious? Or can someone recommend something to help him out? His father thinks someone may have touched his face with something on their hands, but nobody can remember what it may be."

“That happens to my babe with ranch sauce but we just have a bath and put lotion on and she’s fine by the next day. It doesn’t seem to bother here. Did he eat something new at dinner? Perhaps it’s an allergy.

That happened to my son when he was like 1yr old. It went away after a few days and his cheeks were so red and hot. We never really found out why.

My son ate one night and his face turned red and got a slight rash. Can’t remember what it was, but normal food we always eat. Dose of benadryl and it was gone by morning.

My daughters face used to turn bright red after she had sauce (any sauce, tomato, brown, Mayo etc) If the sauce got on her face she looked like she had a rash wherever I’d wipe it off from.

Did he have any ranch or Mayo? It makes my toddlers face red and blotchy. And if he gets it in his belly it turns red.

I noticed this with my son and I thought it was the wipes but it turned out to be the tomato sauce I was wiping off that made his face red. I swapped sauces and now he is fine.

Red sauce, ketchup acidic foods.

Hands door and mouth does that too…

Sounds like a good allergy

I think I read it somewhere that it is not right to wipe the face with wipes, dry toilet paper is better.

Dose of benedryl and let the dr know. But acidic food can do this especially if he has sensitive skin. My daughter has eczema and when she eats warm things or acidic things it gets worse on her cheeks.

It sounds like a food allergy.

I can’t clean my face with baby wipes as they make my face turn red and hot to the touch? I can use them on my hands or anywhere else just not my face! Maybe just wait and see?

Ranch and ketchup will do this.

Its a reaction to the baby wipe. My boys faces do that everytime I use a wipe on them.

Red dyes all 5 of my kids were allergic. They grew out of it

My kids would do this with ketchup. Wherever it got on their face would turn red around their mouth etc but then would go away on it’s own.

Everyone keeps saying it, but both of my girls have done it with ranch dressing since they were little. They are 11 and 13 now and it still happens if it gets on their faces.

What did he have for dinner? It could be an allergy. I would talk to the doctor. Start keeping a notebook of when it happens, what foods he ate, other things that could be factors…like the wipes. And communication with the doctor is essential.

Probably just a contact reaction

Idk, but my ex-roommates twins got fifths a couple years ago and we were told once symptoms show they aren’t contagious anymore and its basically on its way out, so hopefully thats a bit of peace of mind for you :crossed_fingers:

It could just be a reaction to the wipes , even if u have been using them for years , all of a sudden his face could just have taken a reaction to them

Did he eat tommato based stuff

My son’s cheeks gets red if he eats tomatoes. I would see if it was the food that gave him that reaction or the baby wipes. But definitely talk to your pediatrician.

My childrens faces done this when they ate ketchup… X

My oldest son used to get this when eating ketchup, until he was around 6.

My 4 yo seemed allergic to green for some time. Green jello turned her mouth area red and green bell peppers too. We haven’t tested it again bc who wants to subject a kid to an allergy right we just don’t give her those things :woman_shrugging:t2:

Spaghetti sauce will do it, acidic stuff… on contact. Or if you were eating something like fish or whatever make note of the ingredients of the meal and test them 1 x 1

My kids get this! Red hot cheeks! I always attributed it to teething… and at least on one child, to wind burn/chapped cheeks that didn’t show up until nighttime. Nothing has ever come from it. Their cheeks are normal and cool to the touch by the next day. For reference, the oldest is 11 and doesn’t get it anymore. This is 2 kids, 10 years apart. :woman_shrugging:t3:

Literally just went thru same thing with my 8 month old about an hour and half ago. Turned out it was cuz he had a fever. 100.7 soon as ibuprofen kicked in the redness went down.

Sounds more like a food allergy

This happens with my son when he eats cinnamon. Wherever the cinnamon touches he’ll get red spots. When I wipe his face it smears it on his face, spreads the rash. I’ve taken him to the Dr who called it dermo something. It doesn’t harm him & goes away on its own. As he’s getting older were learning other foods do it also. He refuses to eat cinnamon & BBQ sauce. Keep a journal of what he eats & when he turns red. It maybe a preservative that’s in many things so you’ll have to do some investigating.

When my son was about to be 2 he would have red spots on his after he ate ketchup only when I washed his face off with a plain wet wash cloth.

It could be an allergic reaction to whatever he ate. My son was allergic to dairy and peanuts and his cheeks would turn red, if he had either one.

My daughter had fifth disease when I was pregnant with my youngest it can cause major issues with early pregnancy. It is highly contagious with children pre school age. Her only symptom was a lace type rash and “slapped” red cheeks. Contact child’s dr just incase.

Ketchup and sometimes some berries does this to my 2 year old. Might be allergies

Why would you not call your doctor instead of asking random people on Facebook?

My son’s cheeks turn bright red alot. He is 2.5 years old. Ive been dealing with it off and on for a while now. I noticed once we started to cut out apple juice or juices of any kind for ice water during dinner (&through out the day), seems to help 100%. Maybe try giving him cold drinks of ice water and just watch. Also when my son is hot(because he runs hot) his cheeks will turn bright red even if the rest of his body isn’t hot, so we usually let him run around with no pants on for a while until his cheeks go back to normal) His doctor’s have noticed and i have brought it to the doctors attention during his health exams but they said there is nothing to worry about. Also ranch does that to my son but its more like blotches around the mouth rather then bright red cheeks. If it is a food allergy he will get hives all over his body(not just his cheeks) and it will spread fast. Happened to my son a few months back. One of the Scariest things ever. Or if your little one is still cutting teeth, their cheeks can turn bright red like that and hot to the touch. Also my lil man has eczema and when it flares up a bit his cheeks turn red like that, i put lotion on his cheeks and it seems to help some too. One last thing, some lil babe cheeks turn red when they are starting to come down with a cold/illness. But i would still contact his doctor just to make sure the little one is okay.

Just call the doctor and see what they recommend

Danielle Blubaugh isn’t this what happens to the kids with ranch?

My youngest gets like this with Nutella and any salad dressing.

Happened to me LO today and yesterday. Realized she may be allergic to tomatoes.

My son had that and ended up being scarlet fever with slapped check syndrome

Food allergy my boys break out like that if they eat red sauce

Certain foods or ingredients can irritate a child’s sensative face. Usually, sensitive skin baby wipes will help clear it up, but a warm damp paper towel can work just as well. It’s very normal and usually just a phase. You could try to figure out what is causing the reaction by trial and error, but it usually isn’t severe enough to warrant much concern.

Personally, my face does that during an allergic reaction. I have anaphylaxis to certain foods, but that’s how mine started.

Both my daughter get this reaction one from bbq sauce i noticed after she dipped her chicken nuggets in them it irritated her mouth the other daughtr got a allergic reaction to anything with cinnamon just watch what you give him

My daughter has a food allergy and she would have a spot come on one of her cheeks after eating bbananas. So if you’re introducing new foods try one new food at a time to be able to identify a particular food allergy.

Sounds like a mild food allergic reaction

I was thinking maybe an allergic reaction to something.

Don’t use baby wipes, use a warm washcloth. The ingredients could have changed in the last year that they use in those wipes. Take to Dr. if doesn’t go away soon watch for other symptoms as it may be something else entirely. Perhaps even food child ate caused it.

Ketchup used to turn my daughters Skin red where ever she would get catch up on her self. Sometimes it would even welt up a little bit. She’s outgrown it and she absolutely loves catch up!

It could be allergic reaction to something, or nothing serious at all. My cheeks get red and hot after eating (all the time, especially after eating or drinking hot stuff)
But best to discuss with his doctor.

For my son I always knew when he was going to come down with a cold. First his ears would turn bright pink followed by checks the next day. No fever just bright pink. He’s 34 yrs old now. Practice cautious waiting. Child’s skin could just be getting irritated from all the extra wipe wiping.

This happens to me when i drink alcohol. After a few minutes my face turns beet red and burns. It also is hot to the touch. Went to the doctor and got no explanation. Googled it and it said it was a form of flushing from something in the alcohol. So i cant drink because if it but benedryl did seem to work a little. Hope this helps!

My son had that exact thing! Found out he was allergic to a certain yogurt. Benadryl cleared it right up. It was only a certain one, go gurts are fine tho and that’s all I get for him now :woman_shrugging:t2: could be something in the dinner. But it sounds like an allergic reaction to me, unless of course the medicine doesn’t clear it up ( took about 45 min for his cheeks to cool down and the red to start fading) hopefully that’s all it is for your little as well. :two_hearts:

Children can become allergic to things they were previously fine with and can stop having a reaction to things that were a problem in the past. This is why they don’t do allergy testing at his age. It is also possible that they changed the formulation of the wipes.

Dont concentrate on the wipes what did he eat. My daughter used to do this as a little. Found out 2 years ago she has a ton of food allergies(shes 16 now horrible doctors so it took years to find out) first question her GI Doctor asked is about flushed cheeks as a baby/ toddler.

My granddaughters face gets red after using a wipe then fades away. Her bottom sometimes gets red after wiping her. No other symptoms. Try a wipe for sensitive skin to see if its something more. If it stays I’d say go to the doctor.

Could be the wipes. We noticed it with my daughter only after using the wipes we always use, but it was a new pack. No redness when using a wet paper towel to wipe. Maybe the batch of wipes is stronger than usual

Could be a food allergy. Start keeping a log in everything he eats and see if it happens again. Do not use wipes on his face. Use water and a washcloth.

When I used baby wipes on my 3 year old that I watch his face would get red so I stopped using them and it stopped. Good luck to you I hope you figure it out.

Also know that food allergies does NOT only happen if eaten my son TOUCHED peanut butter and had a severe reaction

Maybe allergic to a specific food or the dyes in food. A friends son would scream and turn red and found out allergic to red dye.

One of my boys did something like that and after a while we found out he was allergic to some lotion that someone had and also he was allergic to small cherry tomatoes.

My son did that with an allergy to nightshades as a toddler and it turned into EoE later on.

Call me crazy, but posting on Facebook asking this medical advice for my baby would not be the first thing I’d do

Same thing happens to my Grandson if I wipe his face with a baby wipe…his bottom is super sensitive too.

Eczema. My Sons cheeks used to do this. Then in the bends of his elbows. Hydrocortisone cream works like a charm!

Did he drink any milk at dinner? When my son was young, he developed a reaction to milk. Anytime he drank milk, his cheeks or neck would turn really red. After a few hours, it would go away.

For all those mom shaming the question on fb. It seems non emergent and just a concern. Trying to find if others have the same problem or something to try differently. There is nothing wrong with a momma asking a question. Obviously if her child wasn’t ok she would be taking him to the pediatrician. :woman_facepalming:t3: Girl you
Got this. This is why I am going to try water based wipes trying to find the best ones. Because the old school wipes are very abrasive.

My kids all have red cheeks. If they have been playing and get hot. Eating hot food will cause it too. I wouldnt worry too much unless other symptoms occur. I have a picture of my oldest wuth bright red cheeks and we were just getting his picture done. My kids still do it as adults. It just happens. Don’t use baby wipes on the face. They. can be very irritating with continuing use.

My daughter developed skin allergies. My doctor told me to wash the affected area with Dove soap (a mild soap) and give her Benadryl. It worked for her.

Did he eat something new? Definitely an allergy to something! Benadryl would probably help!

My daughter did that and it was after eating ranch sweet and sour sauce ,pimento cheese or grauamoli . We notice where ever the sauce or food was turned red.

My twin grandsons in the last 2 weeks have had fifth disease a red cheek it is not worrisome except to a pregnant person I have heard.

Sounds like a food allergy. Was anything cooked in a different oil or did you introduce something new.

I seriously wish people would stop asking for medical advice on here! Especially when it comes to children.
